Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows // Final Thoughts

I went into this year with the goal of reading one Harry Potter book per month in order to finish the series this year. Little did I know I would become so engrossed in it that I would end up reading not one, but three to four and finishing it in two months and I am so happy about it!

So, I’ve been putting off writing this because I can’t believe it’s actually over. Reading these has been an absolute adventure from start to finish—I can’t see any other series giving me the same emotions that this one has. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was, again, a really good one!

Okay I need to address this because I feel like it’s overlooked, but I really want to know how Aunt Petunia felt when she was saying goodbye to Harry… I was so looking forward to that loving embrace he lacked all those years! I’m also happy that Dudley was at least a little bit concerned for Harry when he realized he would probably never see him again. It doesn’t excuse how awful he was to him, but at least he had a heart.

Admittedly, for the first three-quarters I was (for lack of a better word) bored? Experiencing Harry, Ron, and Hermione venture off to find the Horcruxes was fun but I really missed the Hogwarts setting and I was becoming quite restless with none of the questions I had being answered yet. Then, after they visited the Malfoy Manor with about 200 pages to go, I really got more into it and read that last bit in a day. Dobby’s death I knew about already or else I think that would have shocked me but Fred’s death I didn’t know about and that had me so sad that I cried! Literally a good seven pages before that, Ron and Hermione kissed and I was so happy, but then Fred happened at the end of that chapter and I was so upset! I think by that time, it actually set in that this was ending and I was really scared to see who else would die.

Now, for the whole Snape storyline: knowing the truth about Snape, I am really sad that he died. And that whole white doe thing?! Yeah, my mouth actually dropped because I was sure that was Dumbledore’s patronus. However, I don’t think that makes up for everything he did to Harry throughout the years at Hogwarts. I almost can’t believe he was loyal to Dumbledore the whole time because of all the negative things he did in the other books. Nonetheless, I think one of my favourite parts was when Harry looked into the pensive at Snape’s memories and found everything out; it had me at the edge of my seat.

Moving forward, I’m not sure if I would read Harry Potter & the Cursed Child because a) I’m not sure if the whole “read like a play” thing is for me; and b) I have heard mixed reviews, most of them not being good ones. Also, I felt like this was a good way to end it off and the epilogue was enough for me. If you have read it and have any opinion of it, I would love to know!

This was the first series I have ever read in full, and I couldn’t have picked a better one.

  1. I think if you google about Aunt Petunia J.K. Rowling has said a few things about that final meeting and what Petunia was feeling. If you like podcasts there’s also a great one called Alohomora that over-analyses all the books (!) as a reread with deep analysis of each chapter. They’ve also talked about these points in their DH episodes. I wans’t a fan of Cursed Child myself, but a lot of people have said the play itself is good

    • OMG I need to go look asap, I didn’t even know that existed. And I do like podcasts, I’m going to start listening to it now, thank you!!! Yeah there are so many people who thought it was just meh so idk if I want to try reading it. I really want to see it on stage because I know it’s coming to Broadway, but that’s a dream because I don’t live anywhere near New York!

  2. JK Rowling really knows gow to take people on an emotional roller coaster lol.
I am on the “Cursed Child was awful” camp. If I could obliviate it from my memory I would. But it’s a play and I would probably go see it if I could haha.

    • I know!! My heart felt like it was being ripped out of my chest, I had to take a couple breaks in between chapters to recollect myself lol. Okay yeah that’s what I’ve been hearing, and plus idk if it sounds enticing. I don’t want to lose the essence of the characters and I’m afraid that’ll happen. And me too, I love plays!!

  3. I actually haven’t read any of the HP series yet but can guess how good it is with all of the hype! Oh man, can’t believe how much they went through. Snape is such a big character in the HP world. It’s really sad that his actor passed away. Glad you enjoyed it the book :).

    • I was in the same boat not too long ago and reading them was the best thing. It’s a commitment though and that’s a big reason why I was hesitant for so long! And I know, I’m sad about that too!!! I need to watch the movies soon. Thank you 🙂

  4. There’s so many interwoven clever plot lines in this series that are both heartbreaking and so clever and amazing! Like, did you know about the meaning of the first words Snape says to Harry in Potions?

  5. Yay glad you whizzed through them! Ah I get what you mean about Petunia. I was pleased with Dudley’s response too. I really agree the Snape part was one of the best bits. I honestly never read (and never plan to read) Cursed Child- I just don’t feel the need and heard not so good things in reviews. Great review!

    • Me too! I was surprised at how fast I got through them. The only reason I would want to read it is because I miss the characters, but I don’t want to read it if it doesn’t have the same feel! Thank you for your lovely comment 🙂

  6. Deathly Hallows is my second favorite book in the series! I’ve read them all at least a hundred times, not much exaggeration, and I still cry when Fred leaves. It’s so heartbreaking that him and Percy finally make a mends only for it to all come crashing down. Heart breaking is an understatement.

    • It was AMAZING near the end, I read so much in one sitting. I just had to know how it ended and then once the really dramatic stuff started happening I couldn’t stop. And I know, he was in the middle of laughing with Percy 😭 it literally tore my heart to shreds

      • Exactly how I felt!! The first three fourths are necessary but really did drag on and on then just out of no where it was like BOOM all the intensity of a thousand suns!!
