5 of my Favourite Things About Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince

As the roller coaster ride that is Harry Potter comes slowly to a halt, the sixth and second last book has totally outdone itself. From the very first page to the shocking revelations at the end, in my opinion, this has been the best one yet.

5 of my favourite moments or things (in no particular order) were:

Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes

YES Fred and George Weasley have their own joke shop! Honestly, who doesn’t want a Fever Fudge from the Skiving Snackbox as an excuse to get out of class, work, or social interaction in general once in a while? And Extendable Ears? Don’t even get me started.

“I love you Hermione.”

YUP IT HAPPENED, RON SAID THIS ACTUAL SENTENCE. Aaand cue me melting into a puddle. I don’t even care if the context was her helping him with homework. The point is, those words escaped his mouth and I ship it. Need I say more?

Felix Felicis

Yes, the potion itself was amazing- I would love some liquid luck- but you know what else I loved? How Harry used his last bit to protect his friends. What would have become of some of my favourite characters without this potion?! The thought is too cruel to bare. Love, like Dumbledore has said so many times, really is something that Harry has to his advantage against Voldemort and his love prevails no matter how many obstacles he’s faced. That is real magic.

This revelation answered a lot of questions, but brought on so many more! Every scene involving Harry’s look into the Pensive with Dumbledore were all so exciting. I enjoy looking back at young Tom’s life and understanding a bit more about how he ended up the way he did.

This exchange between Dumbledore and Harry

“He accused me of being Dumbledore’s man through and through.”
“How very rude of him.”
“I told him I was.”
Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again. Fawkes the phoenix let out a low, soft, musical cry. To Harry’s intense embarrassment, he suddenly realized that Dumbledore’s bright blue eyes looked rather watery, and stared hastily at his own knee. When Dumbledore spoke, however, his voice was quite steady.
“I am very touched, Harry.”

Knowing what I know now, about how this ends, I’m really emotional about this exchange of words. Harry is so courageous, loyal, and brave- it’s no wonder he got sorted into Gryffindor. Even when the Minister himself was threatening him, he stood his ground for what and who he believed in. Also, it’s not often we get to see Dumbledore emotional like that, and it really touched me.

Wow, one more book to go! I can’t believe it. I’m nervous for how this ends but I’m ready.

Let me know what you think! Do you like this book? What were some of your favourite moments?

Yours through and through,

Catherine

  1. I had to read it twice before I really liked it. The first time it seemed to be just about kissing teenagers and hormones flying around. I know they’re at that age now, but that annoyed me a little. The second time around I was able to ignore that and just focus on the good stuff. Now it’s one of my favourite Harry Potters.

    • You’re right, there was quite a bit more of that this time around, what with all the characters getting together. Personally I didn’t mind it that much but I was still waiting for it to end and for the more magical events to take place. But all that aside, it was an awesome book!
